Lake ecosystems are complex associations of microbes, plants and animals.  The associated food webs, beginning with plants, to the herbivores, to carnivores and eventually to the decomposers, are linked by energy and material transfers.  It is these dynamic transfers and relationships that make up the "Lake" ecosystem. Healthy ecosystems can rebound readily from natural disturbances and human activities.  Once an exotic species is introduced into a suitable environment it often times has the ability to rapidly reproduce and dominate the area. This has a severe negative impact on the delicate balance of that ecosystem.  Organisms and their environment are inseparably interrelated.  They constantly act and react with one another.  These lively interactions occur between and within the plant and animal communities as well as the chemical and physical environments of the "Lake".
